God has made everything beautiful in its time

Ecclesiastes 3:11

About

Each stage of human life has its own character, tasks, challenges, and opportunities. Especially important are the transitions into young adulthood, midlife, and older adulthood. Navigating them well leads to the enlarging of our horizons and the deepening of our souls, the enriching of our work and of our relationships, with God and with other people. There is a strong link between our human development and our spiritual development to maturity.

Often, we have things in our past to make peace with or to find healing for or freedom from. We also need to make peace with our future, including death and what lies beyond. Issues of identity, vocation, relationship, purpose, values, and spirituality recur through life, but in different ways at different life stages.

The journey of Christian formation has its own patterns of development, through times of orientation, disorientation, and reorientation; and these interweave with the ages and stages of human development. All this has a great bearing on our lives as individuals, our relationships with God and others (including partners, family, and friends), our lives together in Christian community, and our witness to Jesus in the wider community.

Most of us need some guidance and support to chart our course through all this in healthy ways, especially as much in the dominant culture, and in contemporary Christian culture, does not seem to promote conspicuous human or spiritual maturity. The resources offered through this website are intended to make a modest contribution towards this. They are offered with the hope and prayer that, as we engage with them, God will graciously make each stage of our lives beautiful in its time and lead us on to ever greater maturity.

Growing old just happens; growing up, as a human being or a follower of Jesus, just doesn’t unless we know how and are intentional about it.

The book explains how human and spiritual development are connected, and how, especially during the transitional times of becoming an adult, reaching midlife, and growing older, we can help each other towards greater maturity.

It shows how important this is for the wellbeing of individuals and communities, including the church’s life and mission, and what leaders and mentors in particular can do to promote this.

Courses

Following Jesus involves particular tasks, opportunities and challenges in the different life stages of young adulthood, midlife, and older adulthood. And at any stage, we may need to make peace with our past experiences or with our future passing.

We explore these issues through retreats or courses, in person or online, as detailed below. They include research-based information, practical exercises and biblical reflections, and we provide a comprehensive booklet.

Stories

Attending the making peace with the past retreat was so refreshing to find words that could express my lived experience and make sense of some of the choices and decisions that have impacted my journey. The unique aspect of the course for me was revealing the impact on my spiritual life, and how my lived experiences have helped to shape my view of God, myself and my response to my faith. The handbook material has given me some great tools to bring about a more healthy spirituality, whilst engaging well with past hurts.
